From dark alley with urine smell to artwork: Aarschot brightens up the inner path to the shopping street with thousands of lights
The Watergang in Aarschot has been transformed from a dark alley into a vibrant light artwork featuring bright colors and 4,500 LED lights. This renovation was initiated by local merchants seeking to improve the access route from the Demerdal parking to the Diestsestraat shopping area. Previously, the alley was unpleasant, often associated with darkness and unpleasant odors. Mayor Gwendolyn Rutten emphasized the importance of creating an artistic space, collaborating with artist Yves Willems. The new design includes a reflective glass wall that enhances the lighting effects, especially at night. The upgrade is seen as beneficial for local businesses, and security measures, including cameras, will be implemented to maintain the area.
