Ban on scooters in 'hotspots' and possibility of curfew: new measures against drug violence in Brussels
In Brussels neighborhoods heavily affected by drug violence, a ban on electric scooters has been implemented. Mayors can also impose additional measures, including curfews, in response to serious security threats. This new police decision, signed by Minister-President Boris Dilliès, replaces temporary measures and establishes a permanent regional framework that can be quickly adapted. Between January and September, there were 74 shootings linked to drug conflicts, resulting in 2 deaths and 28 injuries. The ban on scooters applies to 19 hotspots where drug trade is prevalent, as they were often used in drug-related incidents. Additional regulations include a ban on fireworks and nitrous oxide sales, with existing measures like alcohol restrictions remaining in effect. Mayors can introduce further restrictions if safety worsens, including traffic limitations and curfews.
