Vienna, capital of spies, tightens the noose around Moscow
Austria has expelled four Russian diplomats due to espionage suspicions, bringing the total to 18 since 2020. This follows a broader trend across Europe, where over 600 Russian officials were expelled in 2022, primarily for espionage activities. The Austrian Foreign Ministry cited activities incompatible with diplomatic status, supported by intelligence reports. Vienna's historical role as a hub for espionage continues, with recent expulsions reflecting a shift in Austria's stance on Russian diplomats. Other European nations, including Spain, Germany, and France, have also expelled Russian representatives amid security concerns. Japan and Australia have taken similar actions against Russian diplomats and networks.
