HIV: The American drug agency approves a generic version of a preventive treatment
The FDA has approved a generic version of the HIV preventive treatment lenacapavir, making it accessible at $40 per person annually in 120 countries. This decision, announced by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Unitaid, aims to reduce new HIV infections significantly. The treatment, which requires only two injections per year, can lower transmission risks by 99.9%. Previously, daily pills were necessary for at-risk individuals. While this approval marks a significant advancement in global health, experts emphasize the need for continued efforts, as 1.2 million people contracted HIV last year despite the availability of this new medication.
