Sexual violence: the Senate adopts the bill requiring to inform victims upon the release of their aggressor

The French Senate approved a law to ensure victims of gender-based and sexual violence are informed about their aggressors' release. This legislation, initiated by MP Laure Miller, aims to prevent victims from learning about such releases unexpectedly. The law was prompted by the suicide of a teenager whose attacker was released without notification. Currently, victims can be informed about the end of a sentence, but this often relies on their request or judicial discretion. The new law mandates that victims be informed of any release as soon as possible, although the Senate removed a requirement for a minimum notice period. Additionally, a proposed victim support system was eliminated, leading to criticism from left-wing parties regarding the lack of collaboration from the Senate majority.
