Violent is the despair
In Portugal, the government prioritizes harsh responses to housing protests over addressing the root causes of housing issues. While condemning vandalism, it overlooks the struggles of those unable to afford rent. Recent protests highlight the plight of many facing eviction and homelessness. The government’s narrative shifts focus from social issues to public order, undermining legitimate grievances. With over 723,000 vacant homes, the need for accessible housing is urgent. Political courage is required to mobilize these properties and combat speculation. Immigration should not be scapegoated; instead, the government must confront the real issues driving discontent. Protests demanding housing rights deserve political acknowledgment and action.
