Nile Virus: infections may be going unnoticed
The Portuguese Council for Health and Environment (CPSA) warned about the high likelihood of unnoticed human infections from the West Nile virus due to the spread of transmitting mosquitoes. They highlighted the documented presence of infected animals and the increase in cases in Southern Europe, particularly Spain. Despite no reported human cases in Portugal, four equine outbreaks occurred this year. The CPSA noted a significant rise in human infections across Europe, with Italy reporting 780 cases and 51 deaths. They emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to be vigilant for symptoms and recommended improved mosquito control and public awareness measures.
