Virus Shamonda: an exceptional case
French health authorities reported a patient died from the Shamonda virus in Lyon, marking a potential first human transmission. Shamonda primarily affects cattle, reducing milk production and causing abortions. It is transmitted by Culicoides mosquitoes, not through animal contact or milk. The patient, who had severe immunosuppression, died from neurological complications likely linked to the virus. Diagnosis involves PCR tests and serologies. Currently, there are no specific treatments or vaccines for Shamonda. The general public's risk remains very low, as the virus had not previously infected humans. Authorities advise monitoring reliable sources for updates.
