Fishermen help thousands of eels safely cross at the Maurik hydroelectric power station

Professional fishermen have safely relocated over 9,000 kilograms of adult eels at the hydroelectric power station in Maurik, Gelderland, setting a record. This initiative, part of the 'Paling Over de Dijk' project, aims to protect the migrating European eel, which faces dangers from obstacles like turbines. Fisherman Frans Komen explains that they use large traps to catch eels before they reach the power station, preventing harm. The autumn migration continues, and Komen anticipates the total could reach 10,000 kilograms. Unlike last year, this year's lower water levels allowed for easier passage for eels, highlighting the fishermen's ethical commitment and commercial interest in maintaining healthy eel populations.
