Vitézy: From April, the state would take back the operation of the highways from the company of Lőrinc Mészáros
The Hungarian government plans to terminate the 35-year highway concession and return the operation of expressways to the state-owned Magyar Közút starting April 1, 2027. Transportation Minister Dávid Vitézy announced that negotiations are ongoing with the current operator, Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., regarding the mutual termination of the contract. Vitézy criticized the current concession model, stating it covers highway sections built entirely with public funds, which undermines the rationale for a long-term concession. He emphasized that the state should not hand over highways built with taxpayer money for mere operation. The government aims to resolve the situation through negotiations but is prepared to take action if an agreement cannot be reached.
