Dávid Vitézy: The introduction of average speed measurement on highways is on the agenda

Hungarian Minister Vitézy Dávid announced plans to implement average speed measurement on highways following a speed survey on the M6 motorway. The survey recorded over 8,000 vehicles, with some exceeding 214 km/h. Current laws do not allow penalties based on average speed captured by license plate cameras, despite clear evidence of violations. Vitézy emphasized the need for change, noting that many speed violations occur over long distances, particularly at night. He highlighted that 72.2% of respondents support average speed measurement, and 94.2% agree on stricter penalties for extreme speeding. The ministry aims to enhance road safety rather than simply increase fines.
