Flemish government gives 1 million euros to Limburg non-profit APOPO for dogs that detect mines in Ukraine

The Flemish government has allocated 1 million euros to the Limburg-based NGO APOPO to train dogs for mine detection in Ukraine. These dogs, trained to recognize the scent of explosives, assist in clearing dangerous areas. Since their deployment in 2024, the number of trained dogs has increased from 16 to 49. The initiative aims to address the ongoing threat of unexploded mines in Ukraine, where approximately 30% of the land may still be contaminated. The funding will allow for the expansion of operations, enabling more areas to be surveyed and ensuring safer conditions for residents. APOPO is also known for using animals in humanitarian demining and disease detection efforts globally.
