VMM places extra measuring point for dioxins and PCBs in Zutendaal
The Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) will install an additional monitoring point for dioxins and PCBs in Zutendaal next year. This temporary setup aims to screen air quality in the vicinity of Zutendaal and Genk-South. The local council has approved the location for this monitoring station, which will operate for one year. The VMM has been measuring air quality in the Genk-South industrial area since 1999, initially focusing on PCBs and dioxins, and later adding heavy metals and fine particulate matter. Despite improvements in air quality due to efforts from local industries, the VMM emphasizes the need for this temporary monitoring to assess health risks associated with exposure to these pollutants, which can lead to serious health issues, including cancer.
