Did you have an imaginary friend in childhood? It can also affect your adult life
Researchers from Zurich and Turkey found a link between childhood imaginary friends and adult feelings of presence. Adults recalling imaginary friends reported a stronger sense of another's presence without sensory evidence. The study involved 185 participants, revealing that those with imaginary friends scored higher on presence perception. The spatial patterns of childhood memories showed imaginary friends were often felt nearby, suggesting a connection to how the brain represents the body and environment. Interestingly, while childhood friends were felt in front or beside, adults often sensed presence behind them. This study opens avenues for future research on feelings of companionship in space.
