The use of media texts by chatbots may be illegal, says EU court advisor
The EU Court's Advocate General Maciej Szpunar stated that AI's use of media texts may infringe publishers' rights. He noted that chatbots providing original media content could violate copyright laws. This case marks the EU's first examination of disputes involving AI language models. The Hungarian court referred a case involving Like Company and Google, where Google's chatbot Gemini displayed articles from Like Company's websites. Szpunar emphasized the importance of whether the AI uses basic information or recognizable copyrighted expression. He advised the court to dismiss claims regarding the use of news articles for training AI, as they lack evidence of infringement. A ruling is expected in a few months.
