The authorities of the Lviv region declare 2027 as the year of the UPA. "They are our heroes"
The Lviv Regional Council declared 2027 as the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), its commander Roman Shukhevych, and poet Oleh Olzhych. This decision aims to honor these figures and their contributions to Ukrainian history. The council's culture committee head emphasized the importance of remembering these heroes. The UPA is often viewed in Ukraine as a symbol of independence, while Poland regards its actions during WWII as genocide against Poles. This decision comes amid improving relations between Ukraine and Poland, as President Zelensky acknowledged the need for mutual respect and cooperation in the face of threats from Russia. Tensions have previously arisen over military unit names honoring UPA, leading to diplomatic disputes.
