A 28-year-old Ukrainian man was caught attempting to smuggle a taxidermied hawksbill turtle into Poland without the necessary permits. The turtle is a critically endangered species protected under CITES, which regulates international trade in endangered plants and animals. The Customs and Tax Administration in Rzeszów reported that the man could face imprisonment for up to five years for violating wildlife protection laws. Hawksbill turtles are threatened primarily due to illegal hunting for their beautiful shells, which are used in jewelry and decorative items. Despite international bans, illegal hunting continues to pose a significant threat to the species.
