Community service for 3 youths after helpdesk fraud in Maasmechelen
Three young individuals were convicted for helpdesk fraud in Maasmechelen, deceiving eight victims, primarily elderly. They received community service sentences up to 200 hours or a 12-month prison term, along with fines up to €1,600. One youth's mother also faced penalties for using stolen funds to buy her son a car. The fraud involved impersonating bank helpdesk staff and tricking victims into downloading software that allowed the scammers to access their computers. This led to significant financial losses, including €6,900 and jewelry from a 76-year-old victim. Investigators identified suspects through surveillance footage and linked them to other fraud cases. The mother paid €23,000 for a car with fraudulently obtained money. In total, €55,422 was confiscated by the court.
