"Those who did not pay were beaten or abused": 31 suspects of human smuggling from Afghanistan are on trial in Antwerp

The trial against 31 Afghan men accused of large-scale human smuggling has begun in Antwerp. The gang has reportedly victimized at least 615 individuals since 2017. Prosecutors are seeking over 230 years of prison sentences and the forfeiture of more than 3 million euros in criminal profits. The organization, known as '313', has been active since 2017 and operates under a clear hierarchy, with leaders based in Afghanistan. Victims, including men, women, and children from various countries, were smuggled into Europe, often facing violence and abuse. The prosecution is demanding severe penalties, including up to 15 years for three leaders, with a verdict expected in December.
