Memories until liberation. How does memory work?
Memory allows us to store and recall information, with autobiographical memory being a key type that involves recalling personal life events. Some memories are retrieved intentionally, while others come to mind spontaneously, often triggered by various stimuli such as words, images, sounds, or smells. The strength of the association between the stimulus and the memory influences recall likelihood. Research shows that discussing specific periods can increase the spontaneous recall of related memories. Sensory experiences, particularly smells and tastes, can evoke strong emotional memories, although the intensity of these memories compared to others remains debated. Not all spontaneous memories are pleasant; some may bring back unwanted thoughts. While we can limit exposure to certain triggers, complete control over memory recall is not possible. Interestingly, spontaneous memories often relate to positive experiences, enhancing our mood and well-being.
