‘You need a strong industry’: Telford gun hall brings tank barrel production back to UK
The UK is re-establishing its artillery manufacturing capabilities with a new factory in Telford, built by Rheinmetall, to produce barrels for tanks and artillery. This move comes in response to the changing security landscape following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The factory aims to produce 245 barrels annually, with potential for expansion. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the need for increased production to match adversaries. The factory will initially focus on NATO-standard ammunition and could also produce components for British tanks. Rheinmetall's market value has surged due to increased European defense spending, reflecting a shift towards greater self-reliance in arms production.
