They paid millions for a home by the sea. Now passengers are urgently looking for accommodation
The MV Odyssey cruise ship, marketed as a floating home, halted its journey in Cambodia due to rising fuel costs, leaving 200 passengers to find accommodation on land. The ship, which began its voyage two years ago, was intended for long-term living at sea. Passengers were informed just hours before disembarking, leading to confusion and distress. The operator, Villa Vie Residences, cited fuel price increases from $1,800 to $6,000-$8,000 per cabin due to the Iran conflict. Despite attempts to reduce fuel consumption, the company struggled financially. Passengers reported a lack of support and ongoing requests for financial contributions. The Odyssey, built in 1993, has faced operational challenges and was previously halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
