Goodbye cheap flights? Ryanair tightens its belt significantly

Rising aviation fuel prices are significantly increasing airline costs, projected to exceed 30% of expenses this year, with a total fuel bill increase of around $100 billion compared to 2025. IATA forecasts a nearly 40% rise in fuel costs for airlines, from $252 billion in 2025 to $350 billion in 2026, based on Brent crude oil prices averaging $95 per barrel. Ryanair anticipates a €2 billion increase in fuel costs, potentially leading to a 20% hike in ticket prices. However, the airline is also considering freezing employee wages due to rising operational costs. Ryanair's financial results show a 16% drop in pre-tax profit, primarily due to a 15% increase in fuel costs, despite securing 80% of its fuel bill at fixed prices. The surge in fuel prices is attributed to geopolitical tensions affecting supply from the Persian Gulf.
