Green areas in Macau remain insufficient despite government efforts

Environmentalist Joe Chan criticized the insufficient green spaces in Macau, despite the government's claim of planting 19,000 trees in five years. He emphasized that effective green coverage is more important than just the number of trees. Chan pointed out that Macau's green coverage is lower than that of developed neighboring cities and criticized the unique method of calculating green space, which includes areas with few or no trees. The Municipal Affairs Institute reported a 10.3% increase in green areas and an 8.1% rise in urban trees from 2020 to 2025. Plans for 2026-2030 include optimizing green areas and planting 3,000 more trees.
