Without climate measures, almost all coral reefs are at risk of disappearing

The IUCN's Red List of Ecosystems highlights the state of coral reefs, marking their first inclusion. The assessment covers 127 reef areas, totaling over 180,000 square kilometers. Currently, about 25% of these reefs are severely threatened, with projections suggesting this could rise to 96% by 2075 due to ocean warming. Coral reefs are crucial for marine biodiversity, housing over a quarter of ocean life. Recovery is possible if authorities act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain clean coastal waters. However, recent discussions indicate that biodiversity goals set by 196 countries in 2022 are now unattainable.
