180 people with possible Ebola infection on the run after rebel attack in Congo
On Thursday night, militants from the Allied Democratic Forces attacked Cantine, burning homes and killing at least 33 civilians. The assault also destroyed a health post, forcing an Ebola patient and 180 potential cases to flee. Cantine, located in North Kivu, is facing a severe Ebola outbreak linked to the rare Bundibugyo variant, which has already claimed over 5,000 lives. Ongoing violence in the region hampers efforts to combat the outbreak. The ADF, with roots in Uganda and allegiance to ISIS since 2019, has a history of targeting civilians. In July 2025, they killed 66 people in Eastern Congo, where around 100 other rebel groups, including the Rwandan-backed M23, are active.
