The Kenyan cult leader who starved his followers to death received a 200-year prison sentence.
Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, a self-proclaimed Kenyan pastor, was sentenced to 200 years in prison for the murder of 190 children and one adult. The court also convicted 28 leaders of his sect, some receiving sentences up to 160 years. Judge Diane Mochache emphasized Mackenzie's primary responsibility for instructing followers to starve themselves. Prosecutors sought the death penalty, but the judge opted for a lengthy prison term to allow for potential rehabilitation. Mackenzie encouraged his followers to die of starvation to meet Jesus, leading to his arrest in April 2023 after bodies were discovered in Shakahola forest. His sect, established in 2003, had previously faced scrutiny from authorities for radical views.
