731 million euros per day on weight loss medications
Portuguese pharmacies reported an average daily sale of 731,000 euros in obesity medications in the first half of 2026, the highest ever recorded. Tirzepatide, known as Mounjaro, is the most popular drug in this category. Over 528,000 pens for weight loss were sold in just six months, nearly matching the total sales for all of 2025. The total revenue from these medications reached 132 million euros. Notably, Ozempic, a well-known GLP-1 agonist, is excluded from these figures as it is classified for type 2 diabetes treatment. The Medical Association denies a prescription overuse issue, stating that inappropriate prescriptions are minimal but lack preventive mechanisms. Consequently, Infarmed has increased inspections of pharmacies, with 92 pharmacies checked since January 2025, half facing penalties for dispensing excess quantities.
