According to the president of the Banking Association, banks are still waiting for the regime change

The president of the Hungarian Banking Association stated that banks are still waiting for a "system change" as the government will not eliminate the bank tax and extra profit tax next year. Ongoing negotiations with the Ministry of Finance aim for gradual relief from these burdens by 2028. Despite a rise in operational revenues for Erste Bank, the increased tax burdens led to a 25% decrease in after-tax profits in the first nine months of the year. New regulations effective from 2026 will significantly raise the extra profit tax and bank tax rates.
