The German government does not want to give up hosting the 2027 ice hockey World Championship

Despite seven federations indicating they would not play against Russia, the German government still aims to host the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed support for the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), emphasizing that the event can only proceed if Russia is excluded. Following threats of boycotts if Russia participates, the government is exploring options to ensure the tournament can still take place. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) recently ruled that the IIHF must reinstate Russia, prompting several federations to refuse to compete against them. The DEB is considering returning the hosting rights due to additional insurance costs. Canada has also stated it will not issue visas to Russian players for the upcoming U20 Championship.
