A32 reopens after closure due to risk of falling glass plates

The A32 highway near Grou in Friesland has reopened in both directions after being closed due to safety concerns at the Mid-Fryslân Aqueduct. Glass panels from overhead lights posed a risk of falling. All light fixtures have been removed and the road cleaned, resulting in temporary darkness in the tunnel. The reopening occurred sooner than expected, with the Leeuwarden-bound lane opening Friday evening. The 84 light fixtures had suffered wear due to heavy traffic and environmental factors, leading to material fatigue. Rijkswaterstaat plans to inspect other aqueducts in Northern Netherlands for similar issues.
