The First Citizen – Who Was Sándor Wekerle?

In recent years, the Orbán government has invoked the legacy of former Prime Minister Sándor Wekerle to legitimize its policies. Initially, in 2011, a fund management company was named after him, followed by the announcement of the Wekerle Plan in 2012 aimed at fostering economic cooperation in the Carpathian Basin. Currently, the Tisza government is utilizing Wekerle's name for a new investment program addressing housing issues for young people. This initiative also aims to reshape property policies, offering state-supported loans exclusively to youth while benefiting a broader audience through housing construction and modernization programs. Despite Wekerle's significant contributions to modern Hungary, his legacy remains largely overlooked, except for the establishment of the Wekerletelep housing project in 1906.
