Despite the giant traffic jams, traffic on the M1 motorway continues to grow
Despite heavy traffic jams, the M1 motorway's traffic continues to rise, with delays increasing travel times significantly. The ongoing renovation has not led to a substantial shift towards rail transport, as the MÁV has not effectively promoted train travel as an alternative. Although rail traffic has increased, particularly on the Budapest-Győr route, it remains uncertain if this growth comes at the expense of car traffic. Other countries have successfully redirected traffic to rail during road renovations, but similar efforts in Hungary have not yielded lasting results. The need for improved rail capacity and reliability is evident, especially as future high-speed rail developments are still years away.
