Almost 9 percent more donations via notary: Flemish people prefer to arrange inheritance during their lifetime

In the first half of 2026, Belgium saw an 8.8% increase in notarial gifts, totaling 27,823. Flanders accounted for 67.5% of these gifts, with older individuals predominantly making gifts of movable assets. Notarial spokesperson Carol Bohyn emphasizes the fiscal advantages of gifting over inheritance but warns of potential risks, especially regarding tax implications if the donor passes away within five years. Both movable and immovable gifts rose, with the latter requiring a notarial deed. Bohyn notes that many people prefer to arrange their estates while alive for peace of mind, particularly among those aged 65 and older, who represent a significant portion of givers.
