Box 3 chaos continues: this is now the government's plan
The Dutch tax system includes three boxes, with box 3 focusing on wealth taxation for assets like savings and investments. The government plans to introduce a capital gains tax by 2029, affecting various financial instruments. Currently, taxpayers in box 3 pay tax on a deemed return rather than actual earnings. The proposed capital gains tax will only apply upon realization of profits, which has raised concerns about significant revenue losses for the government. To address this, the cabinet is exploring ways to compensate for an estimated 18 billion euros in lost tax revenue, including lowering tax rates for entrepreneurs and adjusting borrowing limits from their businesses. The box 3 reforms are pending parliamentary approval.
