Weapon from the attack in Krakow. What is the AR-15 and why does it evoke such strong emotions?

A shooting in Krakow's main square resulted in six fatalities and several injuries, including three police officers. The assailant reportedly used an AR-15 type rifle. The AR-15, originally developed by ArmaLite, is often misunderstood as an assault rifle; its name derives from the company and its project number. The civilian version differs from the military M16, primarily in its firing mechanism. The AR-15 has become a symbol in the U.S. gun control debate, with significant sales figures reported. In Poland, acquiring an AR-15 requires a permit, typically for sporting or collecting purposes. Interest in gun ownership has surged in Poland since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with over 50,000 permits issued in 2025.
