Brussels sees the two train accidents in a year in Spain as "very concerning"
The European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, expressed concern over two train accidents in Spain within a year. He announced that the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) will assist in the investigation of the recent Urda train accident at Spain's request. Tzitzikostas emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to determine the causes. He also highlighted the need to enhance ERA's mandate for safety issues and advocated for the rapid deployment of the ERTMS system across European railways to improve safety standards. The Madrid-Sevilla line is currently being updated to implement ERTMS level 2, which is already in use on other high-speed routes. Safety remains a top priority for Brussels.
