Calama frees Zapatero from indictment for embezzlement
The judge in the Plus Ultra case has dismissed the request to charge José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero with misappropriation of public funds regarding jewels he allegedly received from Saudi Arabia. The prosecution argued that these gifts should have been integrated into public assets, but the judge noted that at the time of receipt in 2007, there was no legal requirement for such gifts to be considered public property. The law mandating this was only enacted in 2013. The judge emphasized that ethical guidelines cannot be equated with legal obligations, and thus, the alleged appropriation does not meet the criteria for misappropriation. Additionally, tax inspection procedures against Zapatero and his family have been suspended.
