China predicts major floods in 2027 due to El Niño
China has warned that the current extreme El Niño phenomenon could lead to significant flooding in major river basins by 2027, exacerbated by ice accumulation. Sun Chunpeng from the Ministry of Water Resources highlighted risks in the Yangtze River, Taihu Lake, and Songhua River basins. Other areas may experience variable flooding and increased extreme precipitation events. The risk of glacial lake overflow in the Tibetan plateau is also expected to rise, while some northern regions may face droughts and higher temperatures. Authorities are particularly monitoring the Yellow River for ice blockages that could hinder water flow. Previous El Niño events have been linked to severe flooding in the Yangtze basin. The ministry is implementing preventive measures and enhancing meteorological monitoring in response to recent extreme weather events in China.
