Investigations are underway regarding suspected fraud in Spanish railway developments
The European Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the use of EU funds for railway developments in Spain, focusing on the modernization of safety and communication systems on the high-speed line between Madrid and Seville. Following a recent accident that resulted in 69 fatalities, the Spanish Civil Guard conducted operations at the state railway operator Adif and other agencies. This is not the first tragedy on this line, as a previous accident in January claimed 46 lives, prompting another investigation. The EU approved over €111 million for the modernization of Spain's oldest high-speed rail line, and the prosecutor's office is examining contracts and project documents to determine if there was any misuse of funds.
