The Demer meanders again between Betekom and Werchter: "Can counteract waterlogging"

The Demer river has been restored between Betekom and Werchter, reconnecting nine meanders to combat flooding. This project, initiated by De Vlaamse Waterweg, aims to allow the river to buffer water during high levels and retain it during droughts. The restoration enhances biodiversity, benefiting species like the black stork and the bitterling. Additionally, a new walking and cycling route has been established along the river, with facilities for canoeing and kayaking. This marks a significant step in the Sigmaplan project, which aims to reconnect around thirty historical river bends to the Demer.
