Wind turbines forced by the province will often be turned off soon
Wind turbines in Utrecht may remain idle for hours due to an overloaded power grid, particularly on sunny and windy days. The issue arises as solar panels generate excess electricity that the grid cannot handle. Despite ongoing debates and opposition from local municipalities and residents regarding wind turbine construction, the province has designated 27 suitable locations. Some municipalities, like Montfoort, reluctantly approved turbine projects, while others, like Amersfoort, faced provincial pressure to proceed. New wind and solar installations can only connect to the grid under specific conditions, including shutting down turbines during peak times. The national grid operator Tennet indicates that expanding high-voltage stations is necessary to alleviate the grid congestion, but such projects face local opposition.
