Two changes regarding abortion. The Senate supported the projects
The Polish Senate voted to restore the so-called abortion compromise, allowing abortion in cases of severe fetal defects, with 58 in favor and 33 against. They also supported a criminal code amendment decriminalizing assistance in abortion, which passed with 56 votes for and 34 against. Both laws will be sent to President Karol Nawrocki. The amendment aims to reverse the effects of the Constitutional Tribunal's ruling from October 2020, allowing abortion when there is a high probability of severe fetal defects or life-threatening conditions. The law ensures women can access free abortion services and psychological support post-procedure. The decriminalization law removes penalties for assisting in abortions under certain medical circumstances. Following the Tribunal's ruling, the number of abortions significantly decreased, but recent years have seen a gradual increase in procedures.
