A minister cannot go against his own government – said Mihály Varga about the adoption of the central bank law in 2013

The new leadership of the Hungarian National Bank has reportedly avoided over 100 billion HUF in losses and hundreds of billions in payment obligations. Governor Mihály Varga stated that measures were taken to restore lawful operations and uncover abuses. The bank initiated asset protection and filed necessary reports regarding foundation activities and property investments. Amendments to the central bank law were proposed to prevent future foundation establishments and investment activities. Varga highlighted that there are still valuable assets that can be salvaged, both domestically and internationally. He also noted that the renovation of the bank's headquarters was overpriced, leading to a need for value loss accounting, while a civil lawsuit seeks to reclaim 25 billion HUF. The discussion included the law enabling the creation of foundations from bank profits, with Varga asserting that a minister cannot hold a differing opinion from the government on this matter.
