Spain formally presents Hernández de Cos's candidacy for the presidency of the ECB
Spain has officially nominated Pablo Hernández de Cos as the first Spanish candidate for the presidency of the European Central Bank. The nomination was presented by Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo, with the deadline for other candidates closing today. If no additional nominations are made, Hernández de Cos will compete against Klaas Knot from the Netherlands for the position currently held by Christine Lagarde, who will leave on February 7. The Eurogroup will review the nominations on November 9, with a decision expected by the end of November or mid-December. The ECB presidency is a highly contested role requiring financial expertise and political support.
