MEP questions Brussels about license renewal
Portuguese MEP Paulo Cunha questioned the European Commission about the compatibility of national mobile license durations of 6 to 14 years with EU telecommunications policy, particularly the Digital Networks Act (DNA). The Anacom regulator plans to extend licenses for operators like Meo, Nos, and Vodafone, which could lead to renewals until 2041. The Commission's response emphasized the need for a predictable regulatory framework to encourage long-term investments in advanced networks. It highlighted that the current regulatory framework offers less certainty regarding license duration and renewal. Cunha expressed concerns that Anacom's proposal contradicts the Draghi report's recommendations for longer license durations to mitigate investment risks and enhance technological sovereignty in the EU.
