Finnish court convicts captain and boatswain for serious sabotage of sea cables

A Finnish court sentenced two crew members of the cargo ship Fitburg for severe sabotage of underwater cables. The ship dragged its anchor for about 130 kilometers, damaging two telecommunication cables and endangering others. The captain received a 3.5-year sentence, while the boatswain was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months. The court ruled that both men were aware of the anchor dragging, which was intentional. This case highlights the increasing concern over underwater infrastructure security in Europe, especially following incidents linked to Russian activities since the Ukraine invasion. The ruling is not yet final as the captain plans to appeal.
