Government wants to combat driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs
Portugal's National Road Safety Strategy aims to halve road fatalities and serious injuries by 2030, with a long-term goal of zero deaths by 2050. The strategy includes 15 programs focusing on alcohol and drug driving, speed management, and accident-prone areas. It targets a reduction from 626 to 313 annual deaths and from 2,089 to 1,044 serious injuries. The initiative is structured around five pillars: safe users, safe infrastructure, safe vehicles, safe speeds, and post-accident response. An interministerial committee will oversee the implementation, with action plans set for 2027/2028 and 2029/2030. Recent data shows an increase in road accidents and fatalities this year.
