Heat could cost millions of people their jobs. Two continents are mainly at risk.
Rising temperatures and heat-related work stress could lead to millions of job losses and significant economic impacts in six countries by 2040, according to ILO studies. Ethiopia faces the highest risk, with potential job losses of 1.78 million, followed by Ghana and Sri Lanka. Under high-emission scenarios, losses could escalate further by 2060. The agriculture, construction, and transport sectors are particularly vulnerable. ILO emphasizes the need for workplace safety measures and social protection to mitigate these effects and enhance resilience against climate change.
