Judges advocate for a broad debate on freedom of expression
The Portuguese Judges' Union (ASJP) emphasized the need for a broad debate on the transposition of the EU directive protecting freedom of expression, which has not yet been implemented in Portugal. ASJP President Nuno Matos highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue, especially in light of the current social and political climate. He pointed out that the misuse of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) poses a significant threat to freedom of expression, transforming legal rights into obstacles for public debate. João Nuno Calvão da Silva, Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra, stressed the importance of a strong and independent media for democracy, warning against the abuse of legal rights to suppress press freedom.
